Exercise and Hernias

It is increasingly common, in today's gyms, to appear people with the most diverse pathologies. Of these, the most common are the "famous" hernias. And what are hernias? These are protrusions of tissues outside their “right” place, so when we talk about them, they don't necessarily have to be in the spine, although they are the most common. There are also umbilical, inguinal, and other hernias.

When we talk about disc hernias, we know that it is a displacement of a part of the intervertebral disc out of its normal anatomical location, compressing nerve structures, causing pain and neurological changes.

We can divide them into 3 denominations: cervical, dorsal or thoracic disc herniation, and lumbar hernia.

The main causes are decreased water in the discs with advancing age (making the discs less elastic), genetic predisposition, improper weightlifting, excess body weight, among others.

Symptoms are caused by compression and inflammation of the nerves or medulla, and vary according to the location and severity of the disc protrusion.

The exercise is advised to improve the quality of life of these people, and for this purpose, a program should be made appropriate to their needs, taking into account the type of herniated disc diagnosed.

In this case, after the doctor's indication to start / continue the physical exercise, an individualized program should be elaborated, according to the individual's characteristics, age and physical condition.

This program should always contain a greater focus on strengthening the affected spine (cervical, dorsal, lumbar), as well as core muscles, and focusing on mobility exercises. Ballistic and plyometric exercises should be avoided, and the exercise burden should be low with slow progression.

The important thing is not to stop training, as long as it is the most appropriate, and for that, always seek expert help with the professionals of your gym.
